Guitar Acquisition Syndrome. Yep – I got it bad. I am planning a liquidation in the near future. Robert Beethoven once told me that “You need to get rid of all your toy guitars!” A useful piece of advice that I never listened to.
Was he ever right. I have acquired so many toy guitars since I moved off my boat that I am now overwhelmed by them. I spend more time stringing and deciding which to play than I do actually playing.
There are a lot of people out there that have this same condition. It is well documented. Just do a google search for Guitar Acquisiton Syndrome and you can read all about it. What it boils down to, in a nutshell is hording behaviour as manifested through the aquisition of musical instruments.
I was recently taking an online guitar lesson from Patrick Costello on YouTube (you should check him out if you like folk and aren’t afraid to try a new style). He was describing the process of selecting a proper guitar and brought up GAS. I searched it and discovered what a problem I have. I plan to start ebaying and craigslisting my surplus guitars when I get back from lil’ ol Virginia. I think I’ll be a happy guy and unfortunately, more than likely, they will contribute to gas in whomever I sell and give them to will.
I have to applaud my girlfriend for being so patient and letting me come to this conclusion myself. She thinks, and I don’t blame her, that I’ll sell a few and then just by more. I hope she’s wrong -Kabong!
